Soma Bay: Egypt’s Kitesurfing Paradise, If You Do It Right

If you’ve ever dreamt of kiting over endless turquoise water with the desert sun on your back, chances are Soma Bay has popped up on your radar. For years, this slice of the Red Sea has been hailed as a kitesurfing mecca, and for good reason. The wind is reliable, the water is warm, and the conditions are a playground for both beginners and pros. But there’s a secret to unlocking the true soul of Soma Bay, one that lies beyond the wristbands and buffet lines of the sprawling resorts.

Ditching the All-Inclusive Trap

Let’s be honest. The standard Soma Bay package often involves being locked into an overpriced and, frankly, unsexy all-inclusive hotel. While it might seem convenient, it walls you off from the authentic vibe of the place. You eat on a schedule, you’re surrounded by the same faces, and your adventure feels a bit… pre-packaged.

But what if you could have the freedom of a local with all the perks of a world-class kite destination? Here’s the game-changer: grab an Airbnb apartment. This move single-handedly transforms your trip. You get your own space, you can cook your own food (or explore local eats), and you escape the resort bubble. And getting around? It’s never been easier or cheaper. Just download the InDrive app. It’s like Uber but for a fraction of the cost, giving you the freedom to zip from your apartment to the kite spot whenever the wind calls.

The Spots: Your Kitesurfing Playgrounds

Soma Bay is blessed with massive, shallow lagoons, making it an ideal place to progress your skills. There are a couple of key hubs where the action happens:

  • Surfmotion: Located right next to the Palm Royale, this is probably the most well-known center in the bay. It’s a nice spot with an ok atmosphere and direct access to a massive shallow area. It’s the perfect place to launch, meet other kiters, and get a feel for the local scene. Unfortunately they do not serve any more food at least not in 2026. Reason is that the collaboration with Palm Royale was not super effective (took way too long to deliver food). Hence, bring snacks.

  • Duotone Kiteboarding Center: Another top-tier option that offers fantastic service and access to slightly different areas of the bay. It’s a great alternative if you’re looking for a different vibe or want to explore every corner of this kitesurfing paradise. Note that coming from outside you first have to register at the reception which is bit complicated.

Soma Bay offers a huge area for kitesurfing, with crystal clear water and steady wind for most of the year. There are a few options for places to ride within Soma Bay itself and the kitesurfing conditions range from butter flat to slightly choppy depending where you are. It’s board shorts and tshirt for kiting during the summer, and only 4-5 hours flight from most of Europe, so it’s no wonder this beautiful place is such a popular destination for Europeans to kitesurf year round.

Egypt also offers an incredible amount of history and the Red sea a magnificent variety of sea life, so regardless of your reasons for visiting you won’t be disappointed.

The Wind, The Water, and The Pro Tip

The conditions in Soma Bay are what legends are made of. The wind is consistent, especially in the peak seasons. But it’s important to know what you’re getting into. When the forecast cranks up to 7 Beaufort, the wind can become super gusty close to shore. It’s the kind of wind that can test your patience and make for a choppy ride. This will occur for instance in February. But on the good side, around lunch break the direction changes and the wind gets more stable.

But here’s a piece of insider knowledge that can save your session: look for the Tornadosurf boats. These guys are your ticket to paradise. For a reasonable fee, they’ll whisk you and your gear out into the middle of the bay. Out there, the wind smooths out, the gusts disappear, and you’re left with nothing but clean, perfect wind over buttery flat water. It’s an absolute game-changer and turns a potentially frustrating day into an epic one.

A Shadow on the Horizon

As much as we love Soma Bay, it’s impossible to ignore the worrisome trend along its coastline. The relentless construction of even more all-inclusive temples is a growing concern.

From Soma Bay down to Safaga Bay, the shoreline is slowly being consumed by massive resorts that threaten to sanitize the raw beauty that drew us here in the first place. This development not only impacts the landscape but also risks squeezing out the very soul of the local kite scene, pushing out the smaller, more authentic operations in favor of corporate tourism. Take as an example the sweet 7beaufort Kitehouse up north of the Bay. It became so gusty because of the surrounding buildings they needed to act and offer free downwinders to “Paradise Islands”. Sooner or later they will most probably dislocate or shift more towards Wing Foiling. This is just our feeling, no proof for this and we mean only the very best for the 7beaufort Kitehouse, as the place in itself is great.

Your Soma Bay, Your Way

Soma Bay is, without a doubt, a world-class kitesurfing destination. But the best version of it isn’t found in a resort brochure. It’s found in the freedom of carving your own path—renting an apartment, hopping in a cheap ride with InDrive (forget about Uber), and connecting with the real kite community.

It’s about knowing how to find the best wind, even when it’s gusty, and supporting the local operators who make this place special. So, when you plan your trip, think beyond the all-inclusive walls. Go for the authentic experience. Your adventure, and your wallet, will thank you for it.
