It is located a short distance from the main town of Santa Maria, and due to the pretty friendly kitesurfing conditions and the fact you can choose to kite with either your surfboard or twintip, it tends to be one of the busiest spots in Sal. The island is home to multiple world champion wave kitesurfers, and kite beach is the place where a lot of people hone their skills before hitting the more aggressive wave spots around the island. The wind blows cross onshore, so it’s perfect if you aren’t super comfortable with the waves as you know you will always be blown back to the beach.

The best time to travel to Kite Beach and Santa Maria for kitesurfing is from November to April. This is the time that the trade wind blows so you can be confident you will have reliable wind conditions, and the swells roll through regularly making for excellent wave kitesurfing conditions. During this period, the temperature fluctuates from about 20 to 25 degrees, so you’ll be fine during the day with a t-shirt but you’ll want a wetsuit for kitesurfing as it can get a little chilly, especially towards sunset.&nbsp;As it’s one of the more popular spots on the island it can get a little busy on the water here, but if you are prepared to wait then you can normally find time to kite with less people.

Nabq Bay itself is a modern resort strip. The immediate area is dominated by large all-inclusive hotels, a 4 km paved promenade, and commercial centers like La Strada and Al Khan. It lacks the gritty, authentic feel of older Egyptian towns.If you want local culture or cheap street food, you have to leave Nabq. The Old Market is a 30-minute drive away and is the place to go for traditional Egyptian food, spices, and a more chaotic atmosphere. Naama Bay, the main nightlife and clubbing hub of Sharm El Sheikh, is a 20-minute drive.On no-wind days, the area revolves around diving. Ras Mohammed National Park is about an hour away and has some of the best coral reefs in the Red Sea. You can also book guided desert safaris with local Bedouin tribes or rent electric bikes to ride up and down the Nabq promenade.

Egypt

Nabq Bay sits at the northern end of Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula. It is part of the Nabq Managed Resource Protected Area, established in 1992, which holds the most northerly mangrove forests in the world. While much of the Sharm coastline is dominated by deep water and steep reefs suited for diving, Nabq is the only real kitesurfing spot in the area. It is known for its massive, waist-deep flat water lagoon that stretches up to 1500 meters wide, protected from the open sea by an outer reef.

At low tide, the water gets extremely shallow, and crashing hard can mean hitting the sandy bottom. There are patches of coral and sea urchins scattered around, so wearing booties is a good idea if you plan on walking your kite upwind. Stay clear of the designated teaching zones if you are freeriding. If you ride out past the reef into the open ocean, do not go alone. The current and offshore wind components out there mean that if you break a line, you will drift quickly.

The wind at Nabq Bay blows predominantly from the north or northeast. It hits the beach side-shore or side-onshore, depending on exactly where you launch along the bay. The wind here is driven by a combination of large-scale synoptic systems and local thermal effects caused by the temperature difference between the Sinai desert and the Red Sea.Because of this thermal influence, the wind follows a distinct daily pattern. It usually kicks in early, peaking between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. By midday, as the desert heats up and disrupts the temperature gradient, the wind often drops off. On good days, especially in the peak season, it can hold through the afternoon, but you should plan your sessions for the morning. You can expect a typical range of 15 to 25 knots, with occasional days pushing 30 knots.The main riding area is a massive flat water lagoon. It stays waist-deep for about 1500 meters out, making it an easy place to learn or practice freestyle. The water state inside the lagoon is flat to mild chop. The outer reef blocks the ocean swell, so the lagoon is largely unaffected by tides, though it can get very shallow at dead low tide. If you want waves, you have to ride out past the reef. It takes about a 20-minute upwind tack to reach the open ocean, where you will find moderate rolling swell and some kickers, but no real breaking wave riding.The most reliable wind hits between April and September. February, March, October, and November still deliver rideable days, but the consistency drops. January and December are a gamble and generally not worth booking a dedicated kite trip for.

There are a few other kite spots within easy reach, including Tobia island, Soma Bay, El Gouna and Hurghada. For no wind days there is amazing diving just off the shore, and snorkeling if you want to stay on the surface. El gouna also offers a cable park for no wind days, but it can get busy as all the kitesurfers from all the nearby resorts head there, so it might be worth calling and booking a spot in advance.For a longer trip Luxor can be reached for a day trip, to see some of the incredible historical monuments Egypt has to offer, and if you want to make a longer trip then you can spend a few days on a Nile boat from Luxor to Aswan.

Normally the wind in the afternoon is more reliable as the thermal picks up at 11am and pulls it round to side shore, but you can generally find your spot to kite all day long. The wind in Safaga is generally either on or off, and when it’s on it blows 20 knots and more.This kitesurf spot is a thermal wind spot. For this reason, wind statistics and forecasts are not reliable, because generally wind forecasts are not able to display and predict thermal wind systems. To get more specific wind information you can check with the local&nbsp;kite schools.

Seahorse Bay is a sleepy little Kitesurf Spot, so if you want a bigger party you’ll want to visit <a href="https://kiteguide.com/africa/egypt/el-gouna" title="https://kiteguide.com/africa/egypt/el-gouna" target="_blank">El Gouna</a> or Hurghada. Most restaurants are contained within the hotels and offer a range of different cuisines, but there are some local options if you want to take a wander. Advanced kitesurfers will love it at low tide when the pools appear and the water is at its absolute flattest, but should watch out for really shallow patches! You can kitesurf at any tidal state, but the best bet is to ask the local schools for any dangers when arriving at any new spot.

Hamata is very isolated so the only real options are kitesurfing, diving, snorkelling or fishing. If you want to venture further afield you can go and explore more of Egypt and the incredible historical and cultural spots, but plan at least a few days as you’ll be travelling a long way to get to them!&nbsp;Food wise the accommodations generally offer full board, buffet style food with a mix of European and Egyptian cuisines. If you enjoy partying then Hamata isn’t your best bet, and even if you fancy a drink you might want to pick something up from duty free on your way as the selection locally can be limited.

Hamata Kitesurf: Explore a Hidden Gem for Kitesurfing in Egypt

Hamata’s wind conditions are generally great for kitesurfing, but as with all spots in Egypt it can be on and off, so better to bring your whole kite quiver if you have the space! During the peak season between May and September, the wind generally blows between 15-25 knots when it’s on, but there are still down days where you’ll be better off with a 17m kite. The temperature in peak summer soars during the day towards 40?, so a lycra is definitely a good option in June, July and August to protect you from the sun. The cooler months (March-May and September-November) can bring stronger wind, and you’ll definitely want a wetsuit to keep you warm for longer sessions, 3mm is generally fine closer to summer, but maybe 4/3 in the winter months.Don’t get too close to the mangroves and watch out for shallow water on the reef particularly at low tide. The mangroves are a protected area, so no kiting allowed, but your accommodation will be able to give you all the local information.&nbsp;

Che Shale is not in Malindi town. Mambrui village is about 11 km away by road, while Malindi Airport is about 26 km away. The final approach leaves the Malindi–Garsen road for roughly 3 km of dirt road followed by another 3 km of sand track. That separation is part of the practical reality: there is no quick walk to a row of shops when a fin screw disappears.The lodge has nine bandas, an on-site restaurant and a bar. Seafood is the obvious local staple. The kitchen is particularly associated with crab, and meals are available at the beach rather than requiring a drive back to Malindi.On a no-wind day, the simplest options are already on site. Che Shale runs dhow trips and deep-sea fishing. Mambrui and the Sabaki area are known for their dunes, broad beaches and estuary landscape. Farther south, Malindi has the museum, the Vasco da Gama Pillar and the Portuguese Chapel. Gede Ruins is about 39 km from Che Shale by road, around 45 minutes on the mapped route.Malindi is the place for cash machines, pharmacies, larger shops and hospital care. It is also where you go if you want more restaurant choice or a day with some traffic and noise after several quiet nights at the beach. The lodge setting works well for riding, eating and sleeping in one place. It is less convenient if half the group wants town every evening.

Kenya

Che Shale sits on the sandy coast north of Malindi, near Mambrui and the Sabaki estuary. This part of Malindi Bay has a different shape from the reef-fringed coast farther south: long beaches, dunes and open-ocean swell define the shoreline. Mambrui also has a much older story. Archaeologists have recovered 15th- and 16th-century glass linked to Indian Ocean trade networks.For kiters, Che Shale is known for two monsoon seasons, a wide launch, low traffic and a reef-protected bay with flat water, chop and waves. Kenya’s first kite school opened here in 1999. The school normally reports fewer than 15 riders on the water, so crowd management is rarely the main problem.

The Kuzi drives larger swell and strengthens the northward East African Coastal Current. The flow closer to shore is less tidy because tide, river discharge and water moving out of Ungwana Bay all affect it. Do not assume the current outside the protected bay matches what is happening beside the launch.

Che Shale has two useful wind seasons. The stronger one is the Kuzi, the southeast monsoon. The local kite centre gives the working season as June through the end of September, with an average of 15–25 knots. July through September is the strongest part, commonly 18–25 knots. The wind is described locally as consistent through the day, rather than a short afternoon pulse. July and August are also the better wave months.The second season is the Kaskazi, the northeast monsoon. At Che Shale it normally runs from mid-December to mid-April and averages 15–20 knots. A recent Kenya spot guide describes the Kaskazi angle here as side-shore to side-onshore. It is later than the Kuzi: mornings can be light, then the wind comes up after lunch. The useful pattern is therefore simple. For a Kaskazi session, do not rig because the palms moved at breakfast. Wait for the afternoon flow to establish itself.Both seasons come from the regional monsoon system, not from a local thermal alone. Long-term work on Malindi Bay places the southeast trades broadly between April and October and the northeast monsoon between November and March, with the changeover shifting from year to year. The same research records a land breeze at night and a sea breeze developing towards midday, with its maximum in the afternoon. The local riding wind is the background monsoon reinforced by this daytime sea-breeze component. That reinforcement matters most during the Kaskazi, which explains why the official spot guide describes it as an after-lunch wind.The southeast flow is stronger on average. Historical Malindi Bay records put the strongest seasonal winds at 8–14 m/s, roughly 16–27 knots, and show that the southeast monsoon generates the larger waves and swell. The northeast season is lighter and generally smoother. Windfinder observations from Malindi Airport, covering February 2009 to July 2026, show the same directional shift: easterly to northeasterly winds around the Kaskazi months, then southerly winds through most of the Kuzi period. The airport averages are lower than the beach figures, so they are useful for the seasonal pattern, not for choosing a kite at the launch.Inside the bay, conditions range from shallow and flat to choppy. Waves break farther out, and the local centre runs wave sessions during the stronger Kuzi months. The bay remains rideable across the tide according to the operator, but the 3–4 m regional spring-to-neap tidal range still changes the water state and the amount of shallow water. Outside the protected section, expect more swell and current during the Kuzi.

On the flip side, June to September sees the Kusi winds blowing in from the south-east, albeit less consistently and at lower speeds. In Lamu Island, like many tropical locations, the wind often follows a diurnal pattern, influenced by thermal effects as well as prevailing wind patterns.During the peak kitesurfing season (January to March), the winds, known as Kaskazi winds, are generally consistent throughout the day but often pick up in strength in the late morning or early afternoon as the land heats up and can last until sunset.However, wind conditions can vary day by day and are influenced by a range of factors. It's always recommended to check the local wind forecast for the most accurate information. While not as consistent as some major kiting spots, Tofo’s wind season provides plenty of great days, especially for riders who enjoy mixing sessions with diving, surfing, or simply relaxing between rides.

This is a super chilled spot, so the main attractions are relaxing, chilling or hanging out. But you can organise a beach horse ride, head into town to the market to buy some local produce or touristy bits and bobs, or go diving and check out the only marine national park in Mozambique. The surrounding area is insanely beautiful so there are various other tours offered, from boat rides to jungle adventures, you can choose what suits your taste.

The kite spot at Vilanculos is a flat water spot, with large areas of waist deep crystal clear water and various sand bars creating perfect freestyle kiteboarding conditions at low tide. There are also some waves on the outside but generally better to take a boat out with you for safety and maybe do a big downwinder.Mozambique is a stunning country with plenty to explore other than kitesurfing if you are feeling adventurous, but don’t come expecting a simple package holiday as it’s not a big built up tourist location. There is an incredible amount of beauty in the country for those willing to look for it, and the stunning natural landscape makes it a photographer's dream.

Vilanculo

Watch out for sea urchin. Wear neo shoes, if you walk through the water.

The trade winds blow in Vilanculos from about April to September, and you’ll average between 15-22 knots most days, and there are multiple spots here to launch and land depending on the wind direction. Low tide the sand bars appear and the water is the flattest but you need to be careful of the razor clams which appear in various spots. The tidal range here can be extreme on spring tides, so ask for advice from the local kite schools if in doubt. Speaking of, learning here would be a dream location, as the temperature is perfect, the wind is ideal and the conditions are almost unbeatable! Generally flat water on the inside of the lagoon and outside some waves, this is also a popular spot for starting a 30km downwinder, which can be organised with the local kite schools.

There’s not a whole lot around Walvis bay in terms of partying and nightlife, it’s very much kitesurfing, windsurfing or enjoying the local nature. The dunes and lagoons are the main attractions here, so if flamingoes and stunning landscapes don’t do it for you you might want to look elsewhere for your holiday.

Namibia

Namibia is known for cranking wind and speed records, but Walvis Bay Lagoon has a little something for everyone, with some great waist deep flat water areas perfect for beginner kitesurfers and freestylers, but also endless waves on the outside if that’s your jam. The water is cold and the landscape is rugged, but if you want a pure kitesurfing experience and don’t care about palm trees and infinity pools you’ll have a great time here. It’s long been a haven for windsurfers and hosts a yearly speed competition where speed records are constantly being broken as the wind accelerates over the sandbar, creating butter flat water behind.

Walvis Bay Lagoon offers great waist deep flat water areas perfect for beginner kitesurfers and freestylers, but also endless waves on the outside if that’s your jam.

The wave spot Donkey Bay is on the other side of the lagoon. Don`t go there alone, the wind can blast pretty strong.

Walvis Bay Lagoon’s peak kitesurfing season is between November and April. The wind speed&nbsp;during these months sits around 17 to 35 knots on average, generally slightly lighter in the morning and filling in to full power by lunch. The water in the lagoon is slightly warmer than the ocean, but you’ll still want a wetsuit for kiteboarding all year round, and particularly if you plan to visit the ocean side at all. As the wind can vary so much here it’s definitely a spot where it’s worth getting some local knowledge before you go, so it’s a good idea to reach out to the local kite schools for more accurate wind information.

Shark bay just round the corner is a beautiful place to visit just for the view, but also a nice alternative kite spot. In Langebaan itself you’ll find all you could want to live comfortably, but if you fancy a change Cape Town is about 90 minutes drive, with Blouberg around an hour. There are various vineyards within easy reach for wine tasting and some incredible food, and plenty of incredible vistas if you just want to explore and enjoy the view, so you won’t get bored in a hurry.The West Coast National Park is nearby, but don’t expect to see the big 5 here. If you want to go for a proper safari to try and spot the big 5 there are plenty of short and longer tours available to the larger game parks further away.&nbsp;

South Africa

Langebaan Main Beach offers some fun bump and jump kiteboarding conditions in the lagoon with flat water further out behind the island. The water here is generally warmer than the Blouberg/Cape Town kite spots just up the coast, and the wind is a little lighter for the most part making it ideal for beginners and improving kitesurfers.&nbsp;Langebaan town is a bustling little place with a load of accommodation options, various restaurants, beach bars, supermarkets and everything a kitesurfer could want for a perfect kite trip. The wind will either work here or at the nearby Shark bay (not the dangerous kind) and mixing the two up in one day can be a lot of fun. Most of the local kite schools offer lessons here on Main Beach so be aware of any beginners when entering and exiting the water.

Do not expect much to happen in Langebaan. It’s a safe heaven with rich people, a few bars and that’s it.

The South African Summer from December until March are the best months to visit Langebaan for kitesurfing, when the wind will blow pretty consistently between 15-40 knots. On the really windy days Langebaan is usually the best bet for a spot which is slightly more manageable! Close to the beach the water is choppy, but if you head a bit further out behind the island you’ll get much flatter water and that’s where a lot of the advanced kitesurfers will be riding. The water is warmer here than in Cape Town but you’ll still definitely want a wetsuit for kiting. Out of the water the weather is generally nice and dry, so shorts or jeans and tshirt are fine, but when the wind really blows a hoodie is a good idea.

The spot has 2 trade winds and flat water, with a reef further out for wave riders. Accommodation and kite schools have improved significantly, with fresh seafood available at nearby restaurants. While it can be a bit pricey, locals cook it to perfection. Patience is key, as orders take longer. Paje is a must-visit for nature lovers and kitesurfing enthusiasts, where time seems to slow down and relaxation is the norm.

From June to October and from December to March are the two seasons for kitesurfing, and the wind in both seasons blows cross onshore so it's very beginner friendly. The Kusi blows from the south-east from June to October and maxes out around 25 knots, whereas the Kaskasi blows from the north-east from December and is generally a bit more chilled topping out at 20 knots or so. Most of the time the wind builds through the day so the strongest conditions are in the afternoon. The water temperature is constantly above 24 degrees celsius, so you can leave your winter gear at home unless you get cold easily, which can happen during Africa's winter months (June-September). You'd need only a 2mm shorty at most.
