Getting into Tarifa, the kitesurfing mecca of Spain and Europe

Introduction

Tarifa, located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet, is a unique tourist destination that combines natural beauty with a vibrant culture and endless activities for sports and adventure lovers.

Famous for its strong winds, Tarifa has become the kitesurfing mecca in Europe, attracting kite surfers of all levels, from beginners to experts. But Tarifa is not only kitesurfing, as it offers a wide range of outdoor activities (such as hiking, cycling, surfing, windsurfing, among others) as well as a rich history, delicious gastronomy and a very friendly atmosphere.

The Roman archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, the Almenara towers, the medieval city walls, the castles of Guzman el Bueno and Santa Catalina, are an avid sample of its historical and archaeological interest

And it also has its gastronomic jewels: its star product is the almadraba red tuna, which you can try in specialized restaurants such as El Faro de Trafalgar, El Curro or La Pescadería. Also very typical of the area is “el Tánger”, a stew of meat and vegetables. And among the desserts, “Las Cajillas”, a sweet with Arabic roots consisting of an almond dough with icing, stands out.

Information about wind, weather and water

In Tarifa we can enjoy a temperate Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers. But what really makes Tarifa a paradise for kitesurfers are its winds. There is an effect called Venturi, which causes the wind, when entering the strait, to run at high speed. The region receives two main types of winds:

  • Poniente: A strong and constant wind blowing from the west, ideal for experienced kitesurfers.

  • Levante: A more gentle and thermal wind blowing from the east, perfect for beginners and intermediate kitesurfers.

The water temperature in Tarifa varies from 14°C to 26°C throughout the year, which makes it suitable for kitesurfing during most of the year.

Kitesurfing Spots

Tarifa has a great variety of kitesurfing spots for all levels, from beginners to experts.

To start with, let's talk about Valdevaqueros Beach. Its strongest point is that it is the beach with more atmosphere in the summer months due to its beach bars, but at the same time it is very narrow, so the space is limited and the limitations of areas are not much respected.

Spain - Valdevaqueros Beach

Valdevaqueros Beach, located near Tarifa in the province of Cádiz, Spain, is renowned as one of the premier kitesurfing spots in Europe. The beach gained prominence in the kitesurfing community due to its consistent winds and the vibrant atmosphere fostered by its beach bars. Historically, Tarifa has been a hub for wind sports since the 1980s, and Valdevaqueros Beach stands out for its unique wind conditions, making it a magnet for both amateur and professional kitesurfers.

Los Lances Beach is one of the best kitesurfing spots. The reasons are clear: very long and wide beach, well delimited areas for swimmers and kitesurfers and it has the only kitesurf school in Tarifa with a beachfront establishment. It distinguishes the south and north zone, with different characteristics. If we have to mention a weak point is the presence of strong winds in some areas. And in the southern part of the beach is only allowed sailing from October to June.

Los Lances is one of the four main beaches for kitesurfing in Tarifa, about 3km from town itself. Tarifa is one of the original kitesurfing meccas and still attracting hordes of beginners, intermediates and pro riders to this day. During the summer there will be kite zones set out along the beach so it’s important to try and abide by the rules, but once you are in the water you can enjoy kiteboarding in the open ocean. Tarifa is known for being one of the windiest kite spots in Europe, so there’s a good reason people still flock there in huge numbers, but it can be horrendously busy in peak season so if you prefer untouched empty beaches from your kite holidays this might not be for you. The conditions here aren’t necessarily the best kitesurfing wise, but people return year on year for the mix of kiteboarding and the local vibe.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the Spot Balneario, which is the favorite of the most experienced kitesurfers, especially because it runs offshore wind and works only with easterly wind. In this spot you can enjoy the acrobatics of the riders.

Past the harbor, this Spanish beach is popular among many tourists for its scenic beauty and various beach activities. Situated at the brim of the massive Atlantic Ocean, the kite spot Balneario is a paradise for all professional kitesurfers around the world. Moreover, the beach has no stones and only consists of fine sand. So, sit around and enjoy the enigmatic beauty.

Mobility

Tarifa is a small and pedestrian town, so getting around is easy and comfortable. Most places can be reached on foot or by bike. And for those who do not want to walk, there is a bus service that connects the city center with the beaches and the main points of interest.

The frequency of the buses is about thirty minutes and the single ticket costs around one and a half euro, or cheaper with a transport card. In summer the bus station connects with the main hotels and campsites on the coast and there is also a line that leads from the town of Tarifa to Bolonia beach, where Baelo Claudia is located, a well known Roman archaeological site worth visiting.

Tarifa is also very close to Morocco, and the port of Tangier can be reached by boat in only 35 minutes.

Accommodation and price level

Tarifa offers a wide variety of accommodation options for all budgets, from campsites and hostels to luxury hotels. Prices vary according to season, type of accommodation and location. In general, Tarifa is an affordable destination, especially when compared to other touristic cities in Spain.
