Ria de Alvor is a 2 by 1.5 km tidal lagoon system located between Lagos and Alvor in Portugal's western Algarve. The estuary has been shaped by human activity for over two thousand years. Salt production in the Algarve stretches back to the Phoenician era and continued through Roman times, when large salting factories operated along the coast to preserve fish and produce garum, a fermented fish sauce traded throughout the Mediterranean. The waterways of the Ria have sheltered a fishing community since the Moorish era (8th century), when Alvor was known as Al-bur. Today, the lagoon features four main internal channels and a narrow inlet connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the primary flat-water spot in southern Portugal and draws a massive number of kiters and schools because it provides a protected, shallow learning environment right next to the open ocean. The spot relies entirely on the tides, meaning the riding area changes drastically from a massive expanse of water at high tide to a series of tight sandbanks and butter-flat pools at low tide.
