Korfos Kitesurf Spot in Mykonos
Europe Kiteboard Spot in Greece
Korfos is probably the best-known kitesurfing location in Greece, positioned on the southwestern coast of Mykonos. Traditionally, Mykonos has been an island of winds, known by the ancient Greeks as the "Island of Aeolus," the god of wind. Even to this date, Korfos maintains that old identity by drawing in kitesurfers from every corner of the globe. This is especially popular because it boasts consistent winds throughout the summer season, therefore being a reliable destination for wind sports enthusiasts. It is only a few kilometers away from the vibrant town of Mykonos, reflecting that perfect balance between proximity to urban areas and a rather tranquil beachfront, which suits the conditions for kitesurfing activities perfectly.
Korfos Kitesurfing wind conditions
Korfos enjoys the prevailing summer Meltemi wind, a strong, dry north-northeast wind crossing the Aegean Sea. During the kitesurfing season, from May until September, the Meltemi constantly blows and runs between 15 to 30 knots during most days. The winds at Korfos are usually side-onshore and arrive from the north or northeast. These wind patterns contribute to much safer riding and make it easier to return to the shore without drifting too far downwind. The wind usually picks up in the early afternoon, reaching its peak between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with a mellowing of the sun. It is worth mentioning that during some very windy days, gusts up to 35 knots can be reached; for those days, a smaller kite would be needed for safety.Korfos, on the water conditions score, offers a combination of choppy waves and flatwater patches. The shallow waters closer to the shoreline are smooth, excellent for absolute beginners practicing their water starts or for freestyle tricks. Further out, the wind-driven chop can reach moderate heights, adding a touch of challenge for more advanced riders into small wave riding. The dry summer climate with very few rain or storm interruptions also raises the reliability of the spot in Mykonos. However, Korfos is a versatile spot with consistent winds and intermediate difficulty, both novice and seasoned kitesurfers can be accommodated.

Notice
Being relatively narrow and having rocky parts on both sides, Korfos beach demands special care during launching and landing. Accidents can be avoided by using only the zones of launching designated. The winds are generally side-onshore, but on days of super-strong gusts, the rider has to keep a close watch on the weather. Strong gusts will be hard to handle, especially for beginners. Korfos features a shallow water entry, perfect for complete amateurs in kitesurfing, but one ought to keep an eye out for submerged rocks along the shore as well. It is recommended to wear booties for added safety.
When the wind direction turns east it is getting bumpy. Not really recommended for beginners in October as the wind can get very strong.
