El Gouna Kitesurf Spot in Al-Bahr al-ahmar
Africa Kiteboard Spot in Egypt
El Gouna is an Egyptian tourist resort on the Red Sea, built to resemble Venice with its various canals and lagoons. It also happens to be a reliable spot for wind and kitesurfing, and has been a favourite for European kitesurfers since the early days of the sport. It offers a great destination for families as well as hardcore kitesurfers, from total beginners to pro riders, with warm flat water and almost year round wind. Due to it being very much a constructed resort it’s not to everyone’s taste, but there’s no denying it’s got everything you could need from a flat water kitesurfing spot. There are various options for accommodation ranging in price from budget to very high end, and there are a number of kite spots along the coast here depending on where you’re staying.
El Gouna Kitesurfing wind conditions
The peak season in Egypt and El Gouna is from around June until September, but there is wind almost all year and plenty of people visit for kitesurfing in March or November and get wind, it’s just not as reliable during the colder months. In season the wind normally is either on and blowing 20+ knots or it’s completely dead, it’s rare that you have anything in between. The spots around El Gouna are all flat water or slightly choppy at high tide, with a reef protecting the inner lagoons making perfect conditions for beginners and pro riders alike. There’s also loads of space so you’ll always find a spot to ride yourself, but the launching spots can get crowded and the kite centers enforce their own rules on the beach to avoid issues, so listen to them! This is a perfect beginner spot, with plenty of shallow flat water lagoons up and down the coast, so if you’re looking to learn it’s one of the best and easiest places in the world.
If you fancy a different spot then a day trip to Tawila island is a great butter flat water alternative, and you can find tours from all the kite centres.

How to get to El Gouna and how to bring it about while you're there
Fly into Hurghada International Airport (HRG) and from there it’s around half an hour to get to El Gouna by car. You can get a rental car if you like, but there are cheap tuktuk taxis in El Gouna which are a great way to get around, and make a rental car unnecessary. Getting a taxi from the airport is easy enough, just be sure to haggle and agree a price up front, or make your life easy and book transport through your accommodation provider.
