United States of AmericaWaquoit Bay - Cape Cod

Waquoit Bay is located on the southern shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, straddling the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee. The name comes from the Wampanoag word "Weeqayut," meaning "Place of Light." The area has deep indigenous roots—the Wampanoag Nation inhabited this region for centuries before European settlement began in Falmouth in 1660. The bay itself, approximately 825 acres, is a protected national estuarine research reserve that once supported one of the most diverse estuarine fish communities in Massachusetts. It remains important to commercial and recreational shellfish and finfish fisheries. During World War II, Washburn Island within the bay served as a landing area for the Army Amphibious Command. Today, Waquoit Bay is recognized as an excellent beginner kitesurfing location with the best large shallow-water learning area on Cape Cod.
