The Mistral, also known as Maestrale in Italian, is the prevailing wind in the region and is often the most reliable for kitesurfing. It blows predominantly from the North-West, usually side-shore or side-onshore at La Saline. The Mistral is generally most frequent and robust during the spring and summer months, but it can occur all year round. Strength-wise, it can range anywhere from force 4 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, providing great conditions for intermediate and advanced kitesurfers looking for an exhilarating ride.The Scirocco, on the other hand, blows from the South-East and tends to provide milder conditions, often ranking around force 3 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. This wind blows cross-shore or cross-onshore at La Saline and usually comes into play during autumn and winter, although it can also make appearances during spring and summer. The Scirocco's softer and more consistent nature can create an excellent environment for beginners or intermediates looking to improve their skills or for those who prefer a more relaxed kiting session.In terms of water conditions, La Saline has a versatile nature that complements its wind conditions beautifully. Depending on the direction and strength of the wind, the sea can be anything from calm and flat to choppy with small waves. When the strong Mistral blows, the sea can become somewhat rough, creating challenging conditions that experienced kitesurfers often find thrilling. During these times, the spot is great for freestyle or wave riding.When the Scirocco comes into play, the water conditions are typically calmer. The sea surface can be flat to slightly choppy, making it an ideal setting for beginners to learn and practice their skills, or for freeriders who prefer smoother waters. The cross-onshore direction of the Scirocco also enhances the safety of the spot, as it gently pushes riders back towards the shore.

There are many villages on the north of the lake where kitesurfers can start, and most of the time, kitesurfers and students all go out by boat. Make sure to book in advance and connect with the local people about the wind forecast. Depending on the wind direction you might want to go more south or north. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the surrounding hills and mountains with different difficulty levels, while cyclists can follow the cycling way along the river Adda and reach Switzerland and Silvaplana through cycling routes. Between Dervio and Cremia you will get the Venturi effect and the wind direction is almost perfect S without any wind shadow and obstacles.

Note that the beginner entry is closed from June onwards. Lake Como has no waves or shorebreak, making it a perfect place for kitesurfing. Windguru or Windfinder might not work for Lake Como very accurately, so it's recommended to rely on the thermic winds starting from 12:00 until sunset. Lake Como experiences four major winds, with the thermic wind Breva from the south being the main wind. The stretch is about 15-18 knots, making it ideal for kitesurfing from April to September. Tivano is another thermic wind blowing all year round from the northeast with strengths of about 15-18 knots, while Ventone blowing from the north and Menaggino blowing from the south are not recommended for beginner kitesurfers.
