Kitesurf spot in Lake Como

Alternative spot for the experienced riders

Argegno is a lakeside village on the western shore of Lake Como, positioned at the mouth of the Telo stream. Its history dates back to Roman times, and over the centuries it has been a strategic crossing point between the lake’s western valleys and the main Como basin. Today, Argegno is recognized for its marina, picturesque setting, and cable car to Pigra, which offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. While primarily known as a sailing and leisure boating destination, Argegno’s exposure to Lake Como’s thermal wind systems occasionally attracts adventurous kitesurfers and foilers.

Lake Como Argegno Kitesurfing wind conditions

Argegno is influenced by the same thermal wind patterns that define much of Lake Como’s wind sports scene. The prevailing wind is the Breva, a southerly thermal wind that develops on sunny days as the land heats up. The Breva typically starts to build around midday and peaks in the afternoon, with wind speeds at Argegno generally ranging from 12 to 18 knots. However, the Breva is not as strong or as reliable here as in the northern part of the lake, such as Dervio or Gera Lario, due to the wider basin and less pronounced venturi effect.

The wind direction at Argegno is primarily side-onshore from the south, which is favorable for safety and easy return to shore. On some days, especially in spring and early summer, the Breva may be strong enough for foiling or light-wind kitesurfing, but it rarely reaches the consistent strengths found further north. Early mornings can occasionally bring the Tivano, a northerly wind that is typically lighter and more variable, with speeds in the 10 to 15 knots range, and often fades by mid-morning.

Water conditions at Argegno are generally flat to slightly choppy, with minimal wave action due to the lake’s sheltering mountains. The entry is primarily designed for boats, with docks and marina infrastructure, and there is no dedicated kitesurfing beach. This makes launching and landing more technical and suited only for experienced riders who are comfortable with limited space and boat traffic. The wind season runs from April to October, with the most reliable conditions in late spring and throughout the summer. Due to the spot’s orientation and infrastructure, Argegno is not recommended for beginners or for those seeking consistent high-wind sessions.
