Psalidi Beach Kitesurf Spot in Kos

Europe Kiteboard Spot in Greece

The Greek islands are a goldmine for warm summer kite spots, and Psalidi beach is no exception. The Meltemi thermal wind coupled with a venturi effect between Turkey and the Greek coast make for a reliably windy spot, great for kitesurfing and only a few hours flight from the rest of Europe. The island of Kos offers a little bit of something for everyone, so like much of Greece Psalidi beach makes for a great “family holiday mixed with kitesurfing” destination, and any non kitesurfers will find plenty of other things to do. However, it can be a bit overly touristy in the school holidays (July and August) so it really depends on what you are after.

Psalidi Beach Kitesurfing wind conditions

The highest probability for wind is in July and August, but any time from May until October you can be lucky and get some kitesurfing done. Mostly it’s going to start a little lighter in the morning and pick up towards lunch, so a 70kg guy might start on a 15m kite in the morning and be on a 12m or 9m by lunch when the thermal wind kicks in. The beach is rocky here, so you’ll want to be a little careful walking in and out of the water, and beginners will generally want shoes or booties. The water is choppy, with some little waves when the wind picks up more, but it’s not what you’d call a wave spot. There is some flat water close to the beach and behind the point, but the wind can drop a bit there.

Beginners will be closer to the beach, where they can stand easily enough and there are a few kite schools on the spot that you can learn with. Anyone else kitesurfing will want to stay a little further out to avoid any tangles with the beginners.

Around the Kiteboarding Spot Psalidi Beach

Kos isn’t a huge island, so there’s a lot to see in a relatively small area, and as Greece is world renowned for its history you’d better believe there are some beautiful spots around. Asklepion is a huge healing institution from around 400 BC, which is one of the more touristy attractions in Kos and well worth visiting, and there are a huge number of other Greek and Roman sights nearby. If history isn’t your thing then there are plenty of stunning beaches with crystal blue water, and some great diving and snorkelling spots too. Or just kick back, relax at a nice cafe, eat some delicious food and enjoy a cold drink after a long day of kitesurfing.

How to get to Psalidi Beach and how to bring it about while you're there

Book your flights to Kos International Airport (KGS) and then rent a car, you’ll want one for getting around the island easily. It’s also possible to get around by bus, and with a scooter or bike, but if you’re carrying kite gear this probably won’t be the easiest option. You can arrange kite gear storage for a fee at the kite schools but there’s not really much in the way of accommodation on the spot, so you’ll still have to get there somehow.
