Kitesurf in the Adriatic
Kitesurfing in Dalmatia
Jadrija is a district of Šibenik, located on a peninsula at the entrance to the St. Anthony Channel on Croatia’s central Adriatic coast. Established in 1921 as a municipal beach, Jadrija is known for its early 20th-century bathing architecture and its role as a popular recreational area for locals. Facing the open Adriatic and surrounded by islands, Jadrija’s position provides exposure to the region’s characteristic wind patterns, making it a recognized location for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Dalmatia.
Jadrija (Šibenik) Kitesurfing wind conditions
Jadrija is considered one of the most reliable windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Croatia, with a season that typically runs from March to December. The area is influenced by several key wind systems: the Maestral (northwest thermal wind), the Bora (northeast), and the Jugo (southeast).
The Maestral is the prevailing wind during the main kitesurfing season, from late spring through early autumn. It is a thermal wind, developing on sunny days as the land heats up. The Maestral usually starts around midday and reaches its peak between 2 PM and 5 PM. Wind speeds for the Maestral are generally between 12 and 18 knots, with some days in July and August reaching up to 20 knots. The wind direction is typically cross-onshore or side-onshore, which is optimal for both safety and performance.
The Bora is a strong, gusty wind from the northeast. It occurs mainly in winter and early spring but can appear unexpectedly during the season. When the Bora is present, wind speeds can exceed 25 knots. However, this wind is known for its gustiness and, in some areas, offshore direction, making it suitable only for advanced riders who are prepared for sudden changes in strength and direction.
The Jugo, a humid wind from the southeast, brings moderate to strong wind, generally in the range of 15 to 20 knots. The Jugo can create small wind-driven waves, especially during prolonged periods.
Water conditions at Jadrija are mostly flat to choppy under the Maestral, with minimal wave formation. During stronger Jugo or Bora events, small wind-driven waves may develop, but the area is generally protected from large swells by the surrounding islands. The tidal range is negligible (less than 0.3 meters), and currents are weak, making launching and landing straightforward. Wind reliability is moderate to high during the main season, with a 50–60% probability of kiteable days from June to September. Wind typically starts after midday and lasts until sunset. Water temperatures range from 18°C in spring to 24°C in summer.
