Djerba Lagoon Kitesurf Spot in Midoun
Africa Kiteboard Spot in Tunisia
Djerba lagoon in Tunisia is huge, shallow and still pretty empty as it’s only recently hit the kitesurfing worlds radar. With a reasonably short flight, a giant area to practice, and butter flat water in a number of spots it’s no wonder freestyle kitesurfers and beginners are heading to Djerba to hone their skills. The surrounding island is rich in culture and history and you can spend an enjoyable time here just unwinding and soaking in the local atmosphere. It’s not going to be party central as it’s a quiet place, so if you need a party in the evening you’ll be better off searching elsewhere, but you can while away an evening with a tea and a shisha in town if you want to experience the real local flavour.
Djerba Lagoon Kitesurfing wind conditions
Djerba Lagoon has the best wind conditions from March to November. The wind generally averages somewhere between 12-20 knots, but can get up to 30 knots on occasion. The wind is stabilised by a thermal, and it can be difficult to accurately predict what it will actually do on any given day, so if you want more accurate information your best bet will be to contact the local kite schools. In summer it’s shorts and t-shirt weather, but early and late in the year you’ll want a wetsuit to keep the chill away.
The water is flat in the lagoon and shallow, with a number of super butter flat spots spread over the huge area. Advanced freestylers and wakestyle kiteboarders might want to kite over to the old castle which offers a super flat spot for practicing your tricks. Beginners should be a little careful on light wind days when the seaweed appears in some patches and can cause some horrible line tangles! Having said that the lagoon is a great place to learn to kitesurf, as you can stand everywhere and the wind is very smooth and consistent when it’s blowing.

How to get to Djerba Lagoon and how to bring it about while you're there
Djerba Zarzis International Airport (DJE) is the airport you’ll want to fly to, which is only a short way from the kite spot. Most of the accommodation options are a short drive from the spot itself, and the local kite schools organise shuttles to and from the lagoon. If you are staying alone then you’ll most likely want to rent a car to have your own transport, but if you are coming with one of the kite schools you can just get a shuttle from the airport.
