Che Shale sits on the sandy coast north of Malindi, near Mambrui and the Sabaki estuary. This part of Malindi Bay has a different shape from the reef-fringed coast farther south: long beaches, dunes and open-ocean swell define the shoreline. Mambrui also has a much older story. Archaeologists have recovered 15th- and 16th-century glass linked to Indian Ocean trade networks.
For kiters, Che Shale is known for two monsoon seasons, a wide launch, low traffic and a reef-protected bay with flat water, chop and waves. Kenya’s first kite school opened here in 1999. The school normally reports fewer than 15 riders on the water, so crowd management is rarely the main problem.

Che Shale has two useful wind seasons. The stronger one is the Kuzi, the southeast monsoon. The local kite centre gives the working season as June through the end of September, with an average of 15–25 knots. July through September is the strongest part, commonly 18–25 knots. The wind is described locally as consistent through the day, rather than a short afternoon pulse. July and August are also the better wave months.
The second season is the Kaskazi, the northeast monsoon. At Che Shale it normally runs from mid-December to mid-April and averages 15–20 knots. A recent Kenya spot guide describes the Kaskazi angle here as side-shore to side-onshore. It is later than the Kuzi: mornings can be light, then the wind comes up after lunch. The useful pattern is therefore simple. For a Kaskazi session, do not rig because the palms moved at breakfast. Wait for the afternoon flow to establish itself.
Both seasons come from the regional monsoon system, not from a local thermal alone. Long-term work on Malindi Bay places the southeast trades broadly between April and October and the northeast monsoon between November and March, with the changeover shifting from year to year. The same research records a land breeze at night and a sea breeze developing towards midday, with its maximum in the afternoon. The local riding wind is the background monsoon reinforced by this daytime sea-breeze component. That reinforcement matters most during the Kaskazi, which explains why the official spot guide describes it as an after-lunch wind.
The southeast flow is stronger on average. Historical Malindi Bay records put the strongest seasonal winds at 8–14 m/s, roughly 16–27 knots, and show that the southeast monsoon generates the larger waves and swell. The northeast season is lighter and generally smoother. Windfinder observations from Malindi Airport, covering February 2009 to July 2026, show the same directional shift: easterly to northeasterly winds around the Kaskazi months, then southerly winds through most of the Kuzi period. The airport averages are lower than the beach figures, so they are useful for the seasonal pattern, not for choosing a kite at the launch.
Inside the bay, conditions range from shallow and flat to choppy. Waves break farther out, and the local centre runs wave sessions during the stronger Kuzi months. The bay remains rideable across the tide according to the operator, but the 3–4 m regional spring-to-neap tidal range still changes the water state and the amount of shallow water. Outside the protected section, expect more swell and current during the Kuzi.

Around the Kiteboarding Spot Che Shale
Che Shale is not in Malindi town. Mambrui village is about 11 km away by road, while Malindi Airport is about 26 km away. The final approach leaves the Malindi–Garsen road for roughly 3 km of dirt road followed by another 3 km of sand track. That separation is part of the practical reality: there is no quick walk to a row of shops when a fin screw disappears.
The lodge has nine bandas, an on-site restaurant and a bar. Seafood is the obvious local staple. The kitchen is particularly associated with crab, and meals are available at the beach rather than requiring a drive back to Malindi.
On a no-wind day, the simplest options are already on site. Che Shale runs dhow trips and deep-sea fishing. Mambrui and the Sabaki area are known for their dunes, broad beaches and estuary landscape. Farther south, Malindi has the museum, the Vasco da Gama Pillar and the Portuguese Chapel. Gede Ruins is about 39 km from Che Shale by road, around 45 minutes on the mapped route.
Malindi is the place for cash machines, pharmacies, larger shops and hospital care. It is also where you go if you want more restaurant choice or a day with some traffic and noise after several quiet nights at the beach. The lodge setting works well for riding, eating and sleeping in one place. It is less convenient if half the group wants town every evening.

How to get to Che Shale
Malindi Airport is about 26 km from Che Shale. The lodge quotes a 45-minute transfer and can arrange pickup. From Malindi, drive north on the Lamu road, cross the Sabaki Bridge, then follow the Che Shale signs onto approximately 3 km of dirt road and 3 km of sand track. The sand section is laid with coconut husks, but it is still a beach approach rather than a town road.
Mombasa Airport is about 3.5 hours away by road. Buses and matatus can get you to Malindi and along the main northbound road, but they do not solve the final track to the beach. Without a car, arrange a lodge transfer or taxi. Once checked in, you do not need a vehicle for kiting, food or the beach.

Notice
The Kuzi drives larger swell and strengthens the northward East African Coastal Current. The flow closer to shore is less tidy because tide, river discharge and water moving out of Ungwana Bay all affect it. Do not assume the current outside the protected bay matches what is happening beside the launch.
