Fortim sits at the mouth of the Rio Jaguaribe estuary in the state of Ceará, northeast Brazil. The Jaguaribe is the largest watercourse in Ceará, flowing approximately 350 km from the Serra Grande. Before the construction of the Castanhão Dam, it was known locally as the largest dry river in the world due to its extreme seasonal flow patterns. The surrounding region is a fluvial marine plain characterized by mangrove forests, cliffs, and sand dunes. Historically, Ceará is notable for becoming the first state in Brazil to abolish slavery in 1884. Today, the wide sandy beach at Pontal de Maceió and the river mouth provide an expansive, uncrowded flat-water spot that is highly regarded in the Brazilian kitesurfing circuit.

The primary season runs from June through January, with the most reliable and consistent conditions occurring between August and December. Wind speeds typically range from 12 to 20 knots, blowing consistently from the east, northeast, and southeast. The wind generally starts lighter in the morning and strengthens throughout the late afternoon.
The spot functions at all tide levels, but the water state changes significantly. At low tide, the estuary and river mouth offer shallow, flat water that is ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. As the tide pushes in, the water deepens and develops a bump-and-jump chop, which works well for strapless riding. The wide sandy beach makes launching and landing straightforward, and the massive area means the spot rarely feels congested. Most riders use kites between 8m and 12m depending on the time of day and the specific wind strength.

Logistics
How to get to Fortim
Fortim is located southeast of Fortaleza. You fly into Fortaleza International Airport (FOR) and drive for about two hours to reach the spot. The beach can also be accessed by 4x4 vehicles or beach buggies from neighboring towns. Once in Fortim, having a car or buggy is highly recommended to move between your accommodation, the town, and the launch areas.

Notice
The main hazards at Fortim are the shifting sandbanks in the river mouth and potential overlap with local fishing areas. You must pay attention to the tidal changes, as the water depth and currents in the estuary shift quickly. The wind often spikes in strength during the late afternoon and into the night, so you need to be prepared to rig down. The water is dark but clear, and the sandy bottom is generally forgiving. You only need boardshorts and a rash guard for sun protection, as the water is warm year-round.
