The Keyhole
Last edited on
Kanaha Beach Park, on Maui's north shore, is a prominent kitesurfing location. Historically, the area was part of a larger agricultural landscape, with the central valley between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains once serving as sugarcane fields. The spot known as "The Keyhole" is recognized for its consistent trade winds and a unique launch area that provides access to both flat water and wave riding conditions.

The Keyhole Kitesurfing wind conditions
Kanaha's wind is primarily driven by the Trade Winds, a consistent thermal wind system. These winds are typically northeasterly (NE) to easterly-northeasterly (ENE). The wind direction relative to the beach is generally cross-onshore, making for a safe setup. During the peak season, from May to October, the wind consistently blows between 15 and 25 knots. It often fills in around 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, strengthening through the afternoon and peaking between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, before gradually dying down towards sunset. Summer months can see gusts exceeding 25 knots. The trade winds are a result of the pressure differential between the Pacific High and the equatorial low-pressure system, accelerated by the Venturi effect as they funnel between Maui's two large volcanic masses. This geographic feature enhances the wind's strength and reliability. The water state inside the reef is relatively flat, often referred to as the "pond," extending approximately 300–400 meters offshore. Beyond the reef, kiters will find consistent swell and chop, with waves typically ranging from 1 to 2 meters on windier days.

Infrastructure
Around the Kiteboarding Spot The Keyhole
Kanaha Beach Park is located on the outskirts of Kahului, Maui's largest town and commercial center. Kahului itself is not a tourist hub, but it provides all necessary amenities: supermarkets, hardware stores, and a range of local eateries. For a more relaxed vibe, the nearby town of Pāʻia, about 8 km east, offers a selection of cafes, surf shops, and restaurants. On no-wind days, options include exploring the Maui Tropical Plantation, visiting the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, or driving up to the scenic ʻĪao Valley State Monument. The area is known for its agricultural past and its role as a commercial gateway to the rest of the island.

Logistics
How to get to The Keyhole
Kanaha Beach Park is conveniently located approximately 4 km from Kahului Airport (OGG). Rental cars are the most practical way to get around Maui. Without a car, access to the spot is possible but less convenient. The Maui Bus Route 40 (Upcountry Islander) and Route 35 (Haiku Islander) stop at the airport terminal, which is about 3 km from the Keyhole launch. From there, it's a walk or a short taxi ride. Public transport does not directly service the Keyhole parking lot.

Notice
Kitesurfing at Kanaha is subject to strict rules. There is an 11:00 AM launch restriction; no kiting is permitted before this time. This rule is enforced to minimize conflict with other beach users and to manage air traffic due to the proximity of Kahului Airport. A 200-foot altitude limit is in place for kiters. The launch area at The Keyhole can be tight, especially with trees creating a wind shadow. Self-launching is common, but be aware of the turbulent wind near the trees. The reef is present just beyond the flat water section, so be mindful of depths, especially at lower tides. Crowds can be an issue, particularly on prime wind days, with many schools operating in designated zones. Always observe right-of-way rules. Maui Memorial Medical Center is located about 6.5 km away in Kahului.
