Ho’okipa Beach Park Kitesurf Spot in Kahului
North America Kiteboard Spot in United States of America
Ho’okipa Beach Park, located on Maui’s North Shore, is a cornerstone of modern wave kitesurfing. Renowned for its powerful swells and consistent trade winds, the site has hosted international competitions, including stages of the Kite Surfing World Cup. Historically, Ho’okipa gained prominence in the 1980s as a windsurfing mecca, later becoming a proving ground for early kitesurfing pioneers. Its fame stems from its unique combination of cross-onshore winds, reef-generated waves, and challenging conditions that attract advanced riders. The spot is not for beginners; its technical demands and hazards require expertise in wave riding and strong wind management.
Ho’okipa Beach Park Kitesurfing wind conditions
Ho’okipa’s wind conditions are governed by the Northeast Trade Winds, which dominate from May to September. These winds blow at 15–35 knots, with peak speeds occurring between midday and late afternoon due to thermal heating effects. The predominant wind direction is east-northeast (ENE), creating a cross-onshore flow (wind blowing diagonally toward the shore). This orientation generates clean, organized waves while allowing riders to harness wind power for upwind trajectories.
The wind accelerates through the channel between Maui and Molokai, creating localized acceleration zones near the shoreline. Wind reliability is exceptionally high during summer months, with 85–90% of days offering rideable conditions. In winter (October–April), winds shift to northerly or westerly directions, becoming less predictable and often gusty due to passing weather systems.
Wave conditions at Ho’okipa are shaped by Pacific swells refracted around the northern tip of Maui. The reef system produces right-hand waves that average 1.5–3 meters (5–10 feet) in height, with larger winter swells exceeding 4 meters (13 feet). Wave faces are steep and fast, requiring precise timing for takeoffs. The water is deep enough to avoid reef contact during rides but becomes shallow near the shorebreak, which is notoriously powerful.
Water temperatures range from 24°C (75°F) in winter to 27°C (81°F) in summer, making a 1–2mm wetsuit or rash guard sufficient. Wind typically starts building by 10:00 AM, peaking between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Riders should monitor the Pacific Miss buoy (51201) for real-time swell data and the NOAA weather forecast for wind trends.

How to get to Ho’okipa Beach Park and how to bring it about while you're there
Ho’okipa Beach Park is located 12 kilometers east of Kahului Airport (OGG) via the Hana Highway (Route 36). The drive takes 15 minutes by car. Public transportation options are limited; the Maui Bus Route 35 runs between Kahului and Paia hourly but does not stop directly at Ho’okipa. Riders typically rent vehicles or use rideshares (Uber/Lyft). Parking at Ho’okipa is free but fills quickly by midday.
The spot is accessible via a short walk from the parking area to the beach. A 4x4 vehicle is unnecessary, but caution is advised when crossing the rocky shoreline. Bicycles can be used from Paia, though wind exposure on the highway makes this challenging.
