Volcanic landscape kitesurf in a lake
Costa Rica's Lake Arenal is a popular lake spot for kitesurfing between December and April when strong and consistent trade winds blow across the lake. The wind is between 20 and 30 knots and is side-onshore, which makes for a perfect setup to ride, although it may be gusty due to the surrounding hills. The lake itself creates choppy waters with some wind-produced swell, which gives great challenge for freeriders and those wishing to pump at more windy speeds. The scenery is the greatest aspect, as towering Arenal Volcano dominates the scene focus point and green rainforest hedges the edges of the area, making it an all-out immersive nature experience.
Lake Arenal Kitesurfing wind conditions
The wind conditions at Lake Arenal are some of the most consistent in Costa Rica during the dry season, typically from December through April. During this period, the lake sees daily trade winds blowing from the east-northeast, funneled and amplified by the surrounding hills and volcano. These winds often range from 20 to 30 knots, with gusts sometimes pushing beyond that, especially in the afternoons. Mornings can be lighter and smoother, making them better suited for beginners, while afternoons bring stronger and more turbulent gusts, ideal for advanced riders looking for power and big air. Wind can be gusty and changing so be prepared.

How to get to Lake Arenal and how to bring it about while you're there
Getting to Lake Arenal depends on where you're starting from, but the two most common points of entry are San José and Liberia. If you're coming from San José, driving takes around three to four hours. The route winds through scenic mountain terrain, with Route 1 connecting to Route 702, leading directly toward the lake area. Renting a car offers flexibility, especially if you're carrying kitesurfing gear, but you can also take a shared shuttle or a public bus to La Fortuna and then a taxi to the lake.
From Liberia, the drive is shorter—usually two and a half to three hours—and the roads are generally in good condition. Many visitors opt for private transfers or shared shuttles from Liberia as well, which are easy to arrange and can drop you off near the kite spots. There’s also the option of flying; small domestic airlines operate flights from San José to La Fortuna, the closest airport to Lake Arenal. From there, it’s a short drive to the water. While public transport is available, it’s slower and less direct, so most kiters prefer private or semi-private travel to make the journey smoother.
