Risco del Paso Lagoon Kitesurfing Fuerteventura
Last edited on
Risco del Paso sits on the arid, desert-like Jandía Peninsula in southern Fuerteventura, marking the southern end of the massive 9 km Sotavento beach. The spot has hosted the PWA Windsurfing World Cup since 1985 and is famous for its massive tidal lagoon that forms twice a month. It is isolated from the main tourist hubs, sitting at the end of a dirt road surrounded by bare volcanic hills. The combination of completely flat water inside the lagoon and a reliable, accelerated trade wind makes it one of the most heavily trafficked freeride and freestyle spots in the Canary Islands.

Risco del Paso Lagoon Kitesurfing wind conditions
The prevalent wind is the northeast (NE) trade wind, known locally as the Alisio. At Risco del Paso, it blows side-offshore relative to the east-facing beach. The wind here is subject to a massive venturi effect: the hills behind the beach funnel the air between two ridges, compressing it. As the island heats up during the day, the rising warm air compresses the cooler trade wind even further. This double acceleration means Risco del Paso is consistently windier than the surrounding areas, and standard forecast models routinely underestimate the actual wind speed on the beach.
The main season runs from May through September. June, July, and August are the windiest months, with the wind blowing above 16 knots on 95 to 100% of days. During this peak summer period, the wind typically kicks in around 10:00 or 11:00, averaging 20 knots in the morning before accelerating to 30 or 35 knots by the mid-afternoon. From October through April, the wind is less reliable, blowing above 16 knots on 50 to 75% of days, though winter sessions are still common.
The water state depends entirely on the tide. During the new moon and full moon phases, high tidal coefficients push the ocean over the sandbar, filling a 4 km long lagoon. When full, the lagoon offers knee-to-waist deep, perfectly flat water with a sandy bottom. When the lagoon is dry, you have to ride on the ocean side. The ocean water is choppy, with small waves maxing out around 1 to 2 meters upwind of the kite center. Because the wind is side-offshore, the water surface stays relatively smooth, but getting blown out to sea is a constant risk if you drop your kite or break a line outside the lagoon.

Infrastructure
Around the Kiteboarding Spot Risco del Paso Lagoon
There is nothing at Risco del Paso except sand, scrub, and the ION CLUB kite center. For food, supermarkets, and accommodation, you have to drive 7 km north to Costa Calma, a resort town heavily catered toward German tourists. Costa Calma has plenty of straightforward restaurants, bars, and surf shops, but it lacks authentic Spanish charm. On no-wind days, most people drive 10 km to the west coast to surf the beach break at La Pared. You can also hike the volcanic gorge at Barranco de las Peñitas or take a 4x4 down the dirt tracks to the remote Cofete beach on the western side of the peninsula.

How to get to Risco del Paso Lagoon
Risco del Paso is 75 km south of Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), which takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car. Take the FV-2 highway south past Costa Calma to kilometer marker 72, then turn off onto the dirt track leading down to the beach. You absolutely need a rental car; public transport on the island is sparse. Bus line 10 runs from the airport to Costa Calma a few times a day, but it will not get you down the dirt road to the kite spot. The ION CLUB does run a free shuttle for its clients between Costa Calma and the beach.

Notice
The side-offshore wind direction is the main hazard. If you ride on the ocean side, you will be blown out to sea if something goes wrong. The local kite center operates a jet-ski rescue service, but you must pay for a rescue voucher beforehand or face a heavy fee if they have to retrieve you. The spot is zoned to keep kiters and windsurfers separated; the kite zone is located downwind (to the left) of the ION CLUB center. Check the tide charts and coefficients before booking a trip if you want to ride the lagoon — it only fills during the spring tides and remains completely dry for weeks at a time during neap tides.
