Empuriabrava Kitesurfing wind conditions

In summer side-onshore thermal breezes blow from the right throughout the day, gradually increasing in intensity. The thermal winds will be steady at 12 to 13 knots, and occasionally picking up to hit 18-20 knots, so pretty ideal for kitesurfing. When the Tramuntana wind comes from the North or North West, it blows day and night and becomes powerful and gusty close to shore. This generally happens more in the winter months but can happen any time of year so keep your eyes on the forecast. Kitesurfing in these conditions is not for beginners, especially if it does blow cross offshore as the wind can be very gusty close to the beach. For advanced riders the water close to the beach is nice and flat for boosting big air though, and a little further out you can get perfect little kickers as the swell rolls in.

The Empuriabrava kitesurf spot is a thermal wind spot so wind forecasts are not always 100% reliable, so it’s a good idea to reach out to the local kite schools, check their homepages or contact them directly to get more accurate wind information before your trip.

Spending a day in the nature of Aiguamolls de l'Emporda is a good choice if you want to get away from everything. It is Catalonia's most extensive collection of lakes and wetlands, and it was designated as a protected natural park in the mid-80s. The park is open all year for anyone to visit and explore its pathways. It's a terrific place for tired kitesurfers to spend a day in the outdoors, and its home to over 300 bird species, including the Red-naped ibis, cormorant, common blackbird, and iconic great egret.

Empuriabrava, Girona's small Venecia, can be visited on days when there are no winds. A broad range of activities are available, including go-kart racing, shopping, and artificial wave surfing. Cadaqués, L'Escala, and Empries are the most incredible places to visit if you love sightseeing.

Another option is the Camino Natural de la Muga which is a 40-kilometer bicycle track that runs alongside the river La Muga. The route begins at Empuriabrava beach and takes you through various landscapes, including the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Emporda, the Salinas region, and Sant Llorenç de la Murga.
