Last edited on

Spiaggia di su Tiriarzu sits on the east coast of Sardinia, backed by the medieval village of Posada and its 12th-century Castello della Fava. The beach is a 6 km stretch of light sand separated from the mainland by the Tondu and Longu lagoons. The spot is known for consistent thermal winds that kick in during the warmer months, making it one of the most reliable freeride and freestyle locations on the island's eastern shore.

Spiaggia di Su Tiriarzu Kitesurfing wind conditions

The wind at Su Tiriarzu is primarily thermal, driven by the temperature difference between the landmass and the sea. The season runs from April through October. The prevailing winds are southeast (Scirocco) and northeast (Grecale), which hit the beach cross-onshore. During the peak summer months, the thermal effect consistently adds about 5 knots to the base forecast.

The wind typically fills in around midday as the land heats up, peaks in the mid-to-late afternoon, and drops off toward sunset. In July and August, you can expect 15 to 20 knots on a good thermal day. When the Scirocco blows stronger from weather systems rather than thermals, it can push into the 20 to 25-knot range and bring significant chop.

The water state is mostly flat to choppy. Because the bay is wide, there is plenty of space to find clean sections between the chop. There are no significant waves here unless a strong winter storm rolls through. The water temperature ranges from a cold 14°C in winter to 26°C in August. A 3/2mm wetsuit is fine for summer, but you need a 5/4mm or thicker if you ride between November and April.

Infrastructure

Around the Kiteboarding Spot Spiaggia di Su Tiriarzu

Posada is a quiet medieval village built on a limestone hill, offering a stark contrast to the modern resort towns found elsewhere in Sardinia. The main attraction is the Castello della Fava, a 12th-century square tower you can hike up to for panoramic views of the coast and the surrounding lagoons. The town itself has a few straightforward pizzerias and bars where locals gather, but it remains relatively sleepy even in the height of summer.

If there is no wind, you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the Rio Posada and the Tondu and Longu lagoons behind the beach. The area is part of a protected nature reserve (Parco Naturale Regionale di Tepilora), and the wetlands are home to flamingos, herons, and other birdlife. It is a quiet alternative to the busy beaches.

For more action, the larger town of La Caletta is 5 km south. It has a wider variety of restaurants, supermarkets for stocking up on supplies, and a working marina. If you want to explore further inland, the Montalbo mountain range provides rugged hiking trails. The vibe around Posada is laid-back and rural, making it a solid base if you want to avoid the massive crowds of the Costa Smeralda while still getting consistent water time.

Notice

Between May and October, you must use the authorized kite zone located at the Nido Surf Center, 200 meters north of the main beach entrance. The rest of the beach is reserved for swimmers during these months. The bottom is sand but has some sharp shells, so booties are a good idea if you have sensitive feet. Launching is straightforward on the wide beach, but stay clear of the designated swimming zones marked by buoys.
