Kitesurfing spot in Lake Como
Kitesurfing in Lombardy
Valmadrera is a municipality on the southeastern shore of Lake Como, Lombardy, Italy. Historically, it served as a strategic point for trade and transport across the lake, with roots tracing back to Roman times. Today, Valmadrera is recognized within the water sports community for its unique alpine wind systems, attracting windsurfers and kitesurfers. The spot at Parè harbor is particularly known for its reliable morning wind and technical launch, making it a favored location for experienced riders.
Lake Como Valmadrera Kitesurfing wind conditions
The main wind at Valmadrera is the Tivano, a thermal wind coming from the northeast. The Tivano develops due to the temperature difference between the cooler mountains to the north and the warmer plains to the south. It is most consistent from late spring to early autumn and is strongest in the early morning. The Tivano typically starts at sunrise and gradually fades by late morning.
Wind speeds for the Tivano are usually in the 12 to 16 knots range, with some mornings reaching up to 18 knots during the warmest months. The wind direction is cross-shore to slightly offshore at Parè harbor, providing steady and smooth conditions. This makes the spot suitable for freestyle and freeride sessions, but riders must be prepared for early launches, as the wind is best from dawn until around mid-morning.
Occasionally, Valmadrera experiences “ricaduta” winds, which are generated by storm activity in the mountains. These winds are less predictable, gustier, and can be stronger than the Tivano, sometimes exceeding 20 knots. Ricaduta winds are usually linked to thunderstorms and require caution due to their sudden changes and potential for lightning.Water conditions are generally flat to slightly choppy, especially during the Tivano. There is no tidal influence, and currents are negligible. The launch area at Parè is grassy, but water entry and exit are challenging due to rocks and concrete edges. The combination of early wind, technical access, and occasional gusty conditions means Valmadrera is best suited for experienced kitesurfers.
