Gárdony Surfcamping sits on the southern shore of Lake Velence (Velencei-tó) in Fejér County, Hungary, 50 km southwest of Budapest. The lake covers 26 square kilometers along a tectonic depression between the Velence Hills and the Transdanubian plain. It is Hungary's third-largest natural lake, featuring an average depth of just 1.5 meters, with dense stands of common reed (Phragmites australis) covering one-third of its total surface area. The spot at Gárdony developed into a watersports focal point during the 1970s, as the southern railway line turned the shoreline into a accessible recreational zone for urban commuters. Kiters use this specific grass launch because it sits directly on the open water, provides dedicated campsite infrastructure, and catches the full fetch of North-West frontal winds blowing off the opposite shore.

Gárdony Surfcamping Kitesurfing wind conditions
The wind regime at Gárdony Surfcamping is driven by synoptic weather fronts rather than local thermal sea breezes.
The primary wind windows occur during spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October). The dominant directional flow is North-West (NW) to West-North-West (WNW), known locally as the Északi or Északnyugati szél. This wind hits Gárdony cross-onshore to onshore from the right side of the beach.
The mechanism relies on low-pressure systems moving across Central Europe from the North Atlantic or Western Europe. As a cold front clears the Velence Hills (Velencei-hegység) on the northern side of the lake, the air mass compresses and accelerates over the 3 km open-water reach before striking the Gárdony shoreline. Standard spring and autumn fronts deliver steady winds between 16 and 25 knots. Strong post-frontal squalls regularly push wind speeds past 28 to 35 knots for several hours.
During the summer months (June to August), gradient winds drop off significantly, with average wind speeds hovering between 8 and 12 knots. Summer riding depends mostly on passing convective storm cells (zivatar). These summer storms arrive suddenly, bringing violent squalls over 30 knots that last 30 to 60 minutes before falling completely dead.
Because Lake Velence relies on continental frontal systems, the wind does not follow a strict daily clock. A front can fill in at midnight or mid-day, frequently holding for 24 to 48 hours without dropping. Spring and autumn yield an average of 35% to 45% rideable days above 14 knots, while summer reliability sits below 20%.
Water texture is defined by the shallow 1.2 to 1.8-meter lakebed. Winds over 18 knots kick up short, steep wind chop reaching 30 to 50 cm. There are no ocean waves. Slicks form in the lee of dense reed islands scattered near the western end of the lake.

Infrastructure
Around the Kiteboarding Spot Gárdony Surfcamping
Gárdony merges continuously into the adjacent lake towns of Agárd to the west and Velence to the east. The surrounding area consists of low-rise summer cottages, residential streets, and grassy public beaches.
Dining options around the campsite center on casual lakeside buffets (büfé). These spots serve local fast food, including fried hake (sült hekk), garlic lángos, sausage, and Hungarian draft beers. For sit-down dining, traditional taverns (halászcsárda) like Gulyás Halászcsárda along Szabadság út serve freshwater fish soup (halászlé) and beef goulash 1 km from the launch. Grocery runs are handled by Coop and SPAR supermarkets along the main road in central Gárdony.
The region is recognized for its thermal mineral waters and winemaking along the southern slopes of the Velence Hills.
On days without wind, the Agárd Thermal Bath (Agárdi Gyógy- és Termálfürdő) sits 2.5 km west, featuring outdoor and indoor mineral pools open year-round. A paved 28 km cycling path circles the entire lake perimeter, taking about 2 hours to ride. The Bence-hegy lookout tower in Velence, 6 km north, provides views over the lake's reed mazes and open channels. Local wineries in Sukoró and Pázmánd, 10 km north, offer tastings of regional white wines like Ezerjó and Olaszrizling.

Notice
Summer Swimmer Restrictions: From June 15 to August 31, local water police (Vízirendészet) strictly enforce swim zones along public beaches. Kitesurfing inside designated swimming areas is illegal
Shallow Water & Mud Bottom: The lake depth stays between 1.0 and 1.6 meters across most sections. Crashes on unhooked moves mean striking soft mud over hard clay. Hydrofoils are unusable here; standard 85 cm foil masts will strike the lakebed constantly.
