Carribean Kiteboard Spot in Cuba

Kitesurf Spot in CamagĂĽey

When you think of Cuba you probably have cigars and classic cars in mind, but there are some great kitesurfing spots too, one of which is Santa Lucia, an empty palm fringed beach with flat water close to shore and some little choppy waves breaking just a bit further off. Due to sitting in the trade winds it makes for a perfect kite spot from November to May, with steady wind conditions most days during that time. The water is crystal blue and the culture and history is something special, so there are plenty of good reasons to visit Cuba even if you aren’t just there for kitesurfing.

Santa Lucia Kitesurfing wind conditions

The northeast trade wind is reliable here so the main season for kiteboarding lies in between November and May. During these months, the wind speed averages around 12 to 20 knots during the daytime, with occasional stronger days up to 25 knots. The water is warm (it’s the Caribbean duh) so you can leave your wetsuit at home, just make sure you pack plenty of sun cream and/or long sleeved rash vests, there’s nothing worse than a horrible sunburn and having to look after it for the rest of your holiday!

Infrastructure

Around the Kiteboarding Spot Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia is a quiet little corner of Cuba, so it’s a place for relaxing first and foremost. Walking along the beach, enjoying the sand in your toes and watching the sunset should all be on the list of things to do, and if you fancy getting in a bit deeper then diving in the Caribbean will be a memorable experience, especially around the local shipwrecks. You won’t get much fresher seafood than you can here, and it’s well worth sampling some of the local restaurants, then top it off with a nice cocktail and Cuban cigar if that’s your thing.

Further afield you’ll find all the classic Cuban tourist options like Old Havana and Trinidad, so plan your trip accordingly, it would be a shame to miss out on some of those experiences where it feels like you are stepping back in time!
